Mother
JOHN: See there’s two ways I’ve been doing it, one on the piano and one on the guitar, you know. I just want to keep it like, simple. As they say in France. So I’m not quite sure… Oh and that’s another thing, you see, I want to put this bell on the beginning of it. So I’d have to go, ‘bong, bong’ so I don’t know how the fuck we do that.
RINGO: All you have to do is count it in and then just do, do that, you know. And then you can put it on another track right where you said.
JOHN: Go ‘bong, bong, bong’ like that, it’s just by the time I’ve counted it and, and, and all that I’ve forgotten what I’m doing, you know. Is there some way we can count back it and just put that bell on some other time, Phillip? ‘Cause I get too confused. I must just get in the mood, not all that technical shit. Oh mama, mama, mama.
RINGO: We, we do the… On the ‘Mama don’t go’, then…
JOHN: Yeah
RINGO: …on the ‘Daddy come home’, we don’t do anything…
JOHN: Yeah, yeah
RINGO: …and then we do it on that every time.
JOHN: Yeah, I, the only reason I do it is ’cause I can’t play and sing it so you follow me, do everything I do. I go ‘Mama don’t go’, if you can hear the piano. So think of that tune, I think of that in my head, instead of the mummy, don’t follow that, follow…
Mama come home
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go – something…
Daddy come home
Like that you see.
KLAUS: You know, I started with doing… And later on I was doing a…
JOHN: Yeah, that’s better, that’s, that’s it, the one that pushes it…
KLAUS: Much better.
JOHN: …Yeah. And sometimes I go… Two, three, four.
Children don’t do what I have done
I couldn’t walk and I tried to run
[TWENTY-FOUR]
JOHN: Will you just do, try it without the hi-hat for a bit, I know it sounds good on the finished result…
RINGO: Yeah.
JOHN: …but it throws me a little when I’m very quiet.
RINGO: Okay, do you still want those in?
JOHN: Oh yes, yes, it’s just… Just try it.
Mother you had me
But I never had you – Why have we all stopped?
I wanted you
But you didn’t want me – Fuck your boots! I’m too conscious of things now, you know, I’ve gone into that sort of mood, like hearing piano, hearing voice. See I’m just, I’m not used to playing with rhythms and that, I have to sort of tune in to people playing and that. Suddenly realised that there’s other people playing too.
It’s hard to keep believing it all the way through, that’s the problem, you know keep in it all the way through. Without being on junk. Oh mama. And if you don’t watch it, I’ll do it on guitar.
I’d like to dedicate this number to all the mummies in the world
Mother you had me
But I never had you
I wanted you
You didn’t want me
So I, I just gotta tell you
Goodbye
Klaus, you are the Plastic Ono Band. Hit it!
(Instrumental)
JOHN: There’s something, when you start playing I have to, I somehow have to alter my piano playing, do you know what I mean?
RINGO: You have to get stiffer anyway.
JOHN: I’ve got five thumbs. I expected to’ve finished the album by now, you know. It’s not right. I’m very disappointed! Very disappointed indeed. Let’s pretend we’ve just had a joint. Like in 1958.
YOKO: Do you want one? Because I can arrange it.
JOHN: You’re on tape, dear. Well if I’m gonna be the only one that has it, I mean I’m crazy enough. Maybe, is there some other way of drumming it then that it doesn’t go ‘tick-tock’. Soon as it’s, it gets rhythmic, I go to pieces. There’s no feeling, you know it’s like goes mechanical.
Okay but take it anyway you fuck-faced bastard! Twat! Fuck! Piss!
Just remember, ‘Mother, Father, Children’. If you haven’t heard ‘Children’ you’re not living.
RINGO: And it’s great if you don’t listen to you too much.
JOHN: Yeah, I find that too! Okay, it’s ten to five somewhere in the Universe.
Mother you had me
But I never had you
Oh, I wanted you
You didn’t want me
So I, I just gotta tell you
Goodbye, Goodbye
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Hold On
JOHN: Is that? I don’t even know if I’m in tune, you know. But not with the piano, that doesn’t matter really, oh…
KLAUS: Are you sure because if you want to put some piano on it…
RINGO: Yeah, ’cause if you wanna do that piano thing.
JOHN: Oh yeah, yeah, I might want to put electric piano on.
RINGO: Which is out of tune with that one anyway.
JOHN: Yeah. Vibe? Rev?
RINGO: Reverberation, Viberation.
JOHN: Yeah, which is which? Not gonna fade out again, am I?
Hold on
Hold on
Hold on, darlin’
Hold on
Okay.
RINGO: Do you want those fast bits in then there? And then at the end…
[TWO]
RINGO: …play out on that fast one…
JOHN: Yeah, some…
RINGO: …or do you want to play out slow?
JOHN: No, we’ll go out fast because it’s like a word of encouragement.
RINGO: Have you heard the First National Bad? At the end…
JOHN: Oh, Pete Seger.
RINGO: Nicky Most
JOHN: Nesmith
RINGO: Well at the end of their’s they just go… Just one of them and ‘Well we’ll be back as soon as you turn the record over!’ Just stop on the, on the ‘hold on’
JOHN: Oh well,
When you’re by yourself
And there’s no-one else
You just have yourself
And you tell yourself
Just to hold on
Yeah, that one is where you do your sizzle or whatever they call it.
When you’re one
Really one
Get things done
Like they’ve never been done
So hold on
[SIX]
JOHN: Count it in? You’re talking to folk blues from the north of Liverpool, you know, not talking to fucking Mount of Army. I mean, count it in? I mean, who does he think he is? Fuckin’, Manfredd Mouse?
JOHN: ‘Hold On Jock’, Take fart.
RINGO: Just give me a second to get me tea.
Hold on-
JOHN: Oh, fucked it! I thought I’d make benefit of that. I can’t hear anything in the ears.
RINGO: Yeah, you’re in the cans.
JOHN: The guitar isn’t.
RINGO: Yes it is.
JOHN: Is it?
RINGO: Yeah.
JOHN: It’s very strange though. Did I turn off? Oh, I did!
Do you think we’re going too slow, Yoko?
YOKO: No, no, it’s beautiful.
JOHN: Is it?
YOKO: Yes.
JOHN: Okay
Hold on Yoko
Yoko hold on
It’s gonna be alright
You’re gonna make the flight
Oh, you’re by yourself
There’s no-one else
You just have your self
And you tell yourself
To hold on
(Piss on a cow)
Hold on –
JOHN: Okay, that was better. Were we on the air then, or what? Oh! We’re always on the air, class. How did it sound?
YOKO: Well this one, you know, sounded a bit not relaxed, you know. I mean, you know.
RINGO: It was a bit faster.
KLAUS: A bit what?
RINGO: Not relaxed enough
YOKO: After the jam session, you should be feeling relaxed and all that, I thought. But it sounded a bit, sort of, tempo-wise the other one was a bit slower, just a hair slower and relaxed, you see.
JOHN: Whenever you’re in doubt brother Mary comes to you.
Hold on John
John hold on
It’s –
JOHN: Sorry, fuckin’ hell. I’m just crippled, yes? Okay.
Well, hold on John
John hold on
It’s gonna be alright
Gonna win the fight
Oh now, hold on Yoko
Yoko hold on
It’s alright
You’re gonna make the flight
When you’re by yourself
There’s no-one else
You have yourself
You tell yourself to…
JOHN: Yes. See it’s getting a bit cramped round the wrist, Mother.
Oh, now, come on. You keep jumping in.
RINGO: That’s where I come in, isn’t it?
JOHN: No, you’re doing one ahead of time. It’s ’cause I’m going…
Oh, I see. What’s happening?
RINGO: I’m losing it now! That’s what’s happening.
JOHN: Oh I see, well it must be ’cause I’ve always been thinking “Come in there”, you see. Can, oh well, okay let’s do it like that.
Hold on Yoko
Yoko hold on
It’s gonna be alright
You gonna make the flight
When you’re by yourself
And there’s no-one else
You just have yourself
And you tell yourself
Just to hold on
Cookie
Cookie
Cookie
Hold on world
World hold on
It’s gonna be alright
You’re gonna see the light
Oh, and when you’re one
Really one
Well you get things done
Like they’ve never been done
So hold on
I Found Out
JOHN: Maybe I should do it on me own, the begining.
RINGO: Yeah, that would be great!
JOHN: And then you come in, okay.
I told you before
Stay away from my door
Don’t give me that
‘Brother, brother, brother, brother’
The kids on the phone
Won’t leave me alone
So don’t give me that
‘Brother, brother, brother, brother’
No!
I, I found out
I, I found out
Yoko!
Yoko!
Yoko!
Yoko!
JOHN: Okay, okay.
There ain’t no Jesus
Gonna come from the sky
Now that I found out
I know I can cry
I, I found out
JOHN: So what, Ringo, I dunno, it all sounds great to me.
RINGO: I got lost, you know. Okay. I’ll just play it.
JOHN: Okay.
[THREE]
Now look. Some times I mightn’t stop on the ‘Now that I found out’ and go… So don’t worry, you know, just busk it. Okay, this beginning is a cockshow.
KLAUS: Shall I play it more simple or exactly like I’ve been playing?
JOHN: It sounded beautiful to me. Just play how you feel, you know, ’cause it’s, it is Carl Wolf.
I told you before
Stay away from my door
Don’t give me that
‘Brother, brother, brother, brother’
The freaks on the phone
Won’t leave me alone
So don’t give me that
‘Brother, brother, brother, brother’
No!
I, I found out
I, I found out
Some of you sittin’ there
With your cock in your hand
Don’t get you nowhere
Don’t make you a man
I heard something
’bout my Ma and my Pa
They didn’t want me
So they made me a star
I, I found out
I, I found out
(I, I found this out)
I seen through junkies
I been through it all
I’ve seen religion
From Jesus to Paul
Don’t let them fool you
With dope and cocaine
No-one can harm you
Feel your own pain
(I, – okay, fucked)
I, I found out
I, I found this out
Well that must be my gal
Yours don’t look like that
Well that must be my gal
Yours don’t look like that
I know my baby
She’s so big and fat
Well, since my baby left me
Never said a word
What is something that I done
Or something that she heard
You know she’s there
Ow!
Some of you sitting there
With your cock in your hand
Don’t get you nowhere
Make you a man
I heard something
’bout my Ma and my Pa
They didn’t want me
They made me your star
JOHN: My goodness, my Guinness! One of the keys has come off the guitar.
[FOUR]
JOHN: Okay, see ’cause I tend to do the, the beginning a bit slower, so it might put you off. ’cause I, it used to be…
I told you before
Now that I showed you
What I been through
Don’t take nobody’s word
What you can do
There ain’t no Jesus
Gonna come from the sky
No that I found out
I know I can fly
JOHN: That speed’s nice, isn’t it?
RINGO: Okay.
JOHN: What, you don’t think so?
RINGO: Not really.
JOHN: Okay, okay.
Woah! I found out
I found this out
JOHN: I don’t think any of them were as good as the other.
RINGO: No.
Working Class Hero
JOHN: Okay you lot, can you shut up ’cause this door’s open. Why don’t you go in the other room or shut up or something?
They hurt you at home
And they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever
And they despise a fool
Till you’re so fucking crazy
You can’t follow their rules
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
YOKO: Look, that’s great, do you want to take it once and hear it?
JOHN: Yes, yes.
YOKO: Yes, okay.
JOHN: Is the guitar too loud still?
YOKO: It’s alright.
JOHN: I can play it with me thumb, you see… Like that.
YOKO: Maybe that’s– Try that one, yes. It’s beautiful.
JOHN: Okay.
PHIL: Can you not tap, John?
JOHN: Oh, with me foot you mean?
PHIL: Yeah.
JOHN: That’s impossible, I’ll take me shoe off. Still gonna tap a bit. Well, we’ll have to do it like Blackbird.
YOKO: You know, your voice is, every quality of your voice, your voice comes out when you’re a little bit distant from the mic, you know
JOHN: Oh, okay.
YOKO: …it’s very effective. But when you,
JOHN: Yes, yes.
YOKO: …immediately, the minute you come on, you know.
JOHN: Well I have, I close me eyes and I’m, I find meself there, in, right by the mic, you see.
YOKO: Right, right, yes okay.
As soon as you’re born
They make you feel small
By giving you no time
Instead of it all
Till the pain is so big
You can’t function at all – bugger-lugs, bugger-lugs, wrong words, you cunt.
YOKO: You see, why don’t you just sort of sing a bit lightly, you know, all the way through. I mean, if you get very emotional in the end that’s alright. The guitar is not as good, right.
JOHN: Oh yeah, I’m gonna use the pick, yeah.
YOKO: Do you wanna hear it back?
JOHN: No, no. I’m– Let me go.
As soon you’re born
They make you feel small
By giving you time
Instead of it all
Till the pain is so big
You feel nothing at all
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero
Well just follow me
JOHN: What d’you think, Mother?
Isolation
JOHN: See I, if we can get into a mood together over a couple of days or something, I’d really like to just do it like this, you know. And at most just put a few things on that I might have thought of over past two years that I’ve been writing them.
There all the same, Phillip, so I mean, you can just take any of them. It should just sound like it does in the earphones, you know. Like the piano’s very sharp and echoey, and the bass is bassy and the drums are drumming. They’re all very slow except for the fast ones.
We’ll try this one now. You can, so you can practise chords and everything, you know.
KLAUS: What’s that?
JOHN: The D one, now. See I’m just gonna go where me mood takes.
People say we got it made
Don’t they know we’re so afraid
Isolation
We’re afraid to be alone
Everybody got to have a home
Isolation
JOHN: If we had a producer or something he’d say ‘carry on’, you see. But we can’t find that drunken junkie.
I don’t expect you to understand
After you’ve caused so much pain – you gits
But then again – you gits
JOHN: Okay, it is very hard, isn’t it?
KLAUS: Yeah, but I like it when it’s kind of wild. It’s only, if you would nod like this but you could…
I don’t expect you to understand
After I’ve caused you so much pain
But then again you’re not to blame
You’re just a human
The sun will never disappear
But the world may not have many years
Isolation
JOHN: We’ll go and hear what they’re doing, should we, gang? Before we turn into Edmundo Ros and His Jazz Quartet.
We’re afraid of every one –
JOHN: It doesn’t matter if you make a correct mistake.
YOKO: See the thing is, bass is very strong, good sound but it sort of muffles the piano, so could you try with a pick?
JOHN: No, no, let him pay with his thumb, you see, because it’s good for mood.
YOKO: Okay.
JOHN: I’m playing the piano very quiet, you see.
YOKO: Yes, we know that but, we’ll try to fix it here then.
JOHN: Maybe you isolate the bass more, you know, put more things round it if it’s picking up on the piano track, is that what it is?
YOKO: Not true, no.
Isolation
JOHN: That sounded pretty good to me. Hey you guys in there, how did that…
YOKO: Yes, that sounded beautiful.
JOHN: There was just a little flamutka on the piano, as usual.
RICHARD: It was just slightly out of time in the middle bit, John.
JOHN: Was it?
RICHARD: But overall it’s sounding far better now.
JOHN: Yeah, but I mean, yeah. What did you think, Yoko?
YOKO: You know the piano mistake and all that but that’s not, you know the overall thing is really getting to be alright, you know.
JOHN: Okay, so mark that one ‘best so far’. That’s the only one I’m interested in so far, okay? So make sure it’s clearly marked.
YOKO: Right.
JOHN: ‘Cause the only mistake was me and I’m only human, a victim of the insane, you see. [laughs] Okay. See, I get into having to conduct it with me head.
RINGO: Yeah, well we’re all with you, so it doesn’t matter where you go.
KLAUS: Yeah.
RINGO: We’re there.
KLAUS: You can do them where you want them.
JOHN: Oh, they’re dreadful, these musicians, you know.
RINGO: Just try nodding your head.
JOHN: See it’s getting the mood alright. It’s getting, sort of, shade. Don’t you think? I think we might have passed your peak. Oh let, we’ll just go anyway, fuck that, you know.
One, two, three, four… Sorry, I’m, fucked it.
One, two, three, four…
I don’t expect you to understand
After I’ve caused so much pain
But then again you’re not to blame
JOHN: Start again, keep going. One, two, three, four…
I don’t expect you to understand
After I’ve caused so much pain
But then again you’re not blame
You’re just human
JOHN: A ragtime blues. Lordy how those two-
[TAKE TWENTY-FOUR]
JOHN: Okay. Is it me racing on the piano?
KLAUS: Nobody else is playing.
YOKO: Yes. Racing on the piano.
JOHN: Yeah. Okay. I’m struggling like mad to keep on the beat, I was. I think I’m just gonna forget about it.
We’re afraid to be alone
Everybody got to have a home
Isolation
Just a boy and a little girl
Trying to change the whole wide world
Isolation
The world is just a little town
Everybody trying to put us down
Isolation
I don’t expect you to understand
After you’ve caused so much pain
But then again you’re not blame
You’re just a human
A victim of the insane
We’re afraid of everyone
Afraid of the sun
Isolation
The sun will never disappear
But the world may not have many years
Isolation
JOHN: I don’t think that one was as good as the first one.
Remember
Aross the great water
To see the great man
Across the great water
To see the great man
With a flower in his hand
And his finger up his arse
And his ears and his nose
And his nose and his ears
And his toes and his ears
And his nose and his feet
And his toes and his feet
YOKO: Do you want to look at this way and bow or something? Great! Fantastic!
JOHN: Avant-fucking-Garde!
YOKO: Is this still going on?
JOHN: Did you invite Doris to tea, did you?
Doodle-oodle-oo
Doodle-oodle-oo
Well, remember how the man
Used to leave you-
JOHN: It’s getting a bit fast, fucking hell! Now looky here!
KLAUS: Did it change tempo?
RINGO: What?
KLAUS: Did it change rhythm?
RINGO: Only for about a bar.
JOHN: I got a little bit beat for you boys and girls here, I’d like to keep it round in the… Well now, here’s a story about you and me, and me and you and… This here’s a story about… This is a story.
Okay, I mean, that was silly. Now there seems a…
RINGO: It’s too slow to do that one.
JOHN: Yes, well, in between, it was a bit too much, I used to just do…
Remember how –
JOHN: Okay. I want to hear the bum-bum-bum-bum. Yeah. And the bass too.
Don’t you worry
‘Bout the way it’s gone
And don’t you worry
‘Bout what you’ve done
And how you run
And what the fun
Was like at one
And two
And three –
JOHN: Well. George!
GEORGE: Great!
JOHN: Ah… Is it tuned to open E?
GEORGE: Yes. No, no, it’s probably F-Sharp or something.
JOHN: Oh well, you know, I mean.
GEORGE: F-Sharp. ‘Cause is was so strung so slack when it was…
JOHN: The piano sounds a bit bassy to me.
Now everything sounds a little better.
Remember when you were young
JOHN: Hey, hey, hold on. The voice is about ten miles behind, it’s the wrong kind of echo, sweetie.
KLAUS: Something coming back like out of sync
JOHN: It goes ‘remember’ and then ‘remember’
KLAUS: Out of sync
JOHN: Out of sync. It’s the wrong speed, probably.
Happy birthday to me –
JOHN: Hey come on, you’re doing that.
RINGO: Yes, but that’s how it was.
JOHN: Okay, or turn the voice up a little, will you. So as I can, I don’t have to lean into the mic so much. And I can hear my low notes better. Oh now you’ve turn the echo off. You can’t have it all, John. I should have been a ventriloquist.
RINGO: Count it.
JOHN: One, two, three, one, two, three.
RINGO: Oh, come on, come on, you can’t go on waltzing, you know. Come on.
KLAUS: One, two, three.
JOHN: What? You gave us four last time. One, two, three, four, five. No, come on, I don’t know how to do this. One and-a two, and-a one, two, three… You did it before just normal.
KLAUS: What?
JOHN: Two, three. What?
KLAUS: Just start on one after you count four.
JOHN: Okay.
RINGO: Come in on the fifth.
KLAUS: One, two, three, four.
Remember when you were young
JOHN: What, what was wrong? That sounded perfect.
RINGO: What happened?
KLAUS: The rhythm changed round.
RINGO: Yeah, but that’s alright, makes it sound funky, you know.
JOHN: Yeah, funky Broadway, I mean, I’d like to do about twenty of those C to As.
RINGO: Well you do as many as you like, I’ll just change as soon as you come on to the…
JOHN: No, no, but Klaus and I have things to talk about.
RINGO: Oh I see.
JOHN: Okay. Okay.
If you ever change your mind
About leaving it all behind
Remember, remember
Today
Hey!
(And don’t you worry)
And don’t feel sorry
(‘Bout what you’ve done)
The way it’s gone
(And don’t feel sorry)
And don’t you worry
(‘Bout the way it’s gone)
‘Bout what you’ve done
(Just remember)
No, no Remember
Remember

The fifth of November
JOHN: In England it’s the day they blew up the Houses of Parliament. We celebrate it by having bonfires. It was an ad-lib, you know. And it begins to sound like Frankie Laine, you know, when he’s singing, ‘Remember’, and then it was the end and I didn’t know how to get out, ‘Remember, the fifth of November’, and it went on for about another seven or eight minutes, you know and was just ad-libbing and goofing about but then I cut it there and just exploded because it was a good joke, you know. And I thought it was just poignant that we should blow up the Houses of Parliament.
Love
Love is free
Free is love
Love is giving
Giving love
Love is needing
To be loved
Love is you
You and me
Love is knowing
We can be
Love is free
Free is love
Love is giving
Giving love
Love is needing –
JOHN: What? It’s a bit. Yes? See the sound on the guitar is much nicer than in the earphones. The strings are ringing. I think this mic’s too bassy or something. Could you just bring a pen so as I write ‘living’ down, Mal. Instead of ‘giving’. Just relax my Kentucky braces. Fuck.
Love is reaching
Reaching love
JOHN: I was thinking about me bum guitar note. This guitar it’s too stiff for this one, you see. This little guitar is easier to play, you see. I don’t have to think of the high, the bass notes so much. Is that alright?
Love is real
JOHN: Shit. Wasn’t very good. I just can’t get in this mood, you see.
[TAKE TWELVE]
PHIL: Where’s it coming out of, it’s coming out of here.
JOHN: It’s coming out the earphones, do you want some?
Feeling love
Love is wanting
JOHN: No, it goes, goes D-Minor.
Wanting
JOHN: See after that I sing, ‘To be loved’. How does it sound?
PHIL: Shitty.
JOHN: Come on. Let him just be natural and we’ll come and listen. Sam and the Blue Funk Riders present ‘Love’, take one.

We can be
PHIL: Give me some more volume in the ear, earphones.
JOHN: Really?
PHIL: I don’t know.
JOHN: You’re kidding aren’t you?
PHIL: I don’t want to hear myself.
JOHN: ‘More volume’, you’re saying?
PHIL: Hello?
JOHN: Hello, I mean, we’re very loud. It’s very loud that.
PHIL: Yes, now the piano is too loud.
JOHN: Well, I can’t relax stood up here like a fucking nightclub singer. Feel like the guest show on Johnny Cash like this.
PHIL: What’s it sound like Phillip? Yoko? Somebody? I wanna underplay on the left hand, you know what I mean?
JOHN: No, no, you were playing alright. You don’t have to worry about the left hand ’cause I’m your left hand.
(Instrumental)
PHIL: Oh fuck off! Are we taping this?
JOHN: Every golden moment.
PHIL: Oh shit! What about this chord? I wonder if that makes it sound dissonant in there, you know. …Okay, alright.
JOHN: It sounds like it does in the earphones.
PHIL: So you just want a regular…
JOHN: Yes.
PHIL: Okay, I won’t play that.
JOHN: Fuck my boots!
PHIL: Shall we hear some of it, John?
JOHN: See look, I just wanted to carry on so as we didn’t stop and go through all this every time. Yeah. Right. So this time just go immediately into the next one.

Well Well Well
JOHN: I can’t touch anything without getting a shock, you know. Any metal. I could die, you know.
RINGO: There are only, how many verses are there then?
JOHN: There’s only three.
[TAKE FIVE]
I took my loved to the big field
So we could catch the English sky
We both were nervous feeling guilty
And neither one of us knew just why
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well
Well
Well
Well did your Mama ever hold you
No, no, no
Did you Mama ever kiss you?
No, no, no
Did she ever do a certain thing you ever didn’t ask for?
No, no, no
Shout!
Shout!
JOHN: Okay.
RINGO: What, what’s the last verse? Where it just carries on after that.
[TAKE FOUR]
JOHN: About a big field, ‘and neither one of us knew just why’, or something.
RINGO: Then it’s ‘well well’ forever.
[WELL WELL WELL, TAKE FOUR]
JOHN: Could well be.
RINGO: ‘Cause I have to keep looking up, ’cause I don’t know which is the end, after we’ve done a few I just have to stop sort of getting into it and look at you waiting for the break.
JOHN: I see. I see.
RINGO: You’ll see that, John.
JOHN: Okay, well if I come out, I’ll say hello.
RINGO: Okay.
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well well well
Well
Well
Well
Well!
Well!
YOKO: I mean, that was great, but–
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, oh well
Well well well, well
Well
Well–
JOHN: I can’t, I can’t do it, me arm’s crippled. Fucking hell! I give in Mamma!
Look At Me
Look at me
Who am I ‘sposed to be?
Who am I ‘sposed to be?
Look at me
What am I ‘sposed to be?
What am I ‘sposed to be?
Look at me
Oh my love
Oh my love
Please look at me
Ah, please look at me, my love
Here I am
Oh my love
Oh my love
Who –
JOHN: Oh, I just couldn’t keep it up. It’s just too much. I’d have to practise about a week to do that. I mean, what else? I did Julia and all them like that. I’d have to be doing it for a few days, you know, I just haven’t done this for years, for six months you see. It’s too much. I’ll strum it. It’ll do for a demo.
Look at me
Who am I ‘sposed to be?
Who am I ‘sposed to be?
Look at me
What am I ‘sposed to be?
What am I ‘sposed to be?
Look at me
Oh my love
Oh my love
Who are we?
Oh my love
Who am I?
Nobody knows but me
Nobody knows but me
Who am I?
Nobody else can see
Just you and me
Who are we?
Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
JOHN: Picking? But it’s so hard, you know.
What? I know why it’s down, ’cause the mic’s about a mile away from, from my face. Oh, it’s stiff again though. How’s the guitar now then? Yes? Well I like it when it does that, you see. That’s just Richard probably warning you. It’s technical. Okay? You alright? No wonder pygmies need salt.
Look –
JOHN: Bugger. What’s that?
Yes
(Hello)
Hello, okay?
(Yes, thank you)
Look at me
Who am I supposed to be?
Who am I supposed to be?
Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
God
JOHN: I had a message from above. And I’m here to tell you that this message concerns our love. The angels must have sent me to deliver this to you. Now, hear me now, brothers and sisters.
God is a concept
By which we measure our pain
Yes, we do
I don’t believe in bubble-bubble
I don’t believe in trouble-trouble
JOHN: I haven’t got the words, you see.
RINGO: If you do that, do you want that, you know, every time you say something, that gap I’ll just fill it in with, with…
JOHN: There you mean?
RINGO: Well, all different ones.
JOHN: I’ve got millions of lyrics but we seem to have done them all. Where the fuck is it? Where the fuck is it? Somebody’s pinched God! God is alive and living in the Eiffel Tower. See I’ve been doing it C, then he got too low.
What’s in-between C and G. I’d use…
KLAUS: E?
JOHN: What? If I put a capo on, you see I like to play the C shape on the guitar. Are you alright with these keys?
I don’t believe in Magic
I don’t believe in I-Ching
JOHN: What do you think of the, what did you think, Yoko? I mean it’s just as valid up there, isn’t it? I’m back to C now.
We’ll take one and then let me listen. You see I haven’t, I haven’t got a concept in me head about this other than it’s meant to be gospel and it doesn’t sound anything like it, you know. I don’t like it like this at all. In fact I don’t feel in the mood for any of this.
RINGO: Have a night off.
JOHN: Well, we could do. It just such a shame to come in all the way and sprout about for two hours and then go, you know.
RINGO: It’s no good sprouting about for twelve hours and still not feeling like doing anything.
JOHN: Yes, yes. Maybe we could do things like put conga on ‘I Found Out’ and put organ on the other one.
RINGO: Yeah. And then after that maybe you’ll feel like it. And if you don’t then get home.
JOHN: ‘Cause I just, I feel dead now. I think the piano maybe is better.
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that’s reality
JOHN: Oh sorry, I fucked the ending. I liked all that beginning.
KLAUS: I can’t remember.
RINGO: Just play anything.
JOHN: Well, just go through the chords.
Okay look, I’ll start it. Yeah, you just were going… You know, just like that. God is a conker who lives on our street. Let me try how to sing the dream is over…
[THIRTY SEVEN-THIRTY SEVEN-THIRTY SEVEN]
JOHN: …with not so heavy a, I have to sing it heavy now, you see.
I was the walrus
I was the dreamweaver
JOHN: Okay, okay, I’ll have to do it like, fairly husky. Okay boys. One, two, three…
God is a concept
By which we measure our pain, yeah
Pain, yeah
I don’t believe in Magic
I don’t believe in Jesus
I don’t believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that’s reality
And so dear friends
You’ll just have to carry on, get it on!
The dream is over
JOHN: God is a convert. Oh yes. Let me just get me… Oh that’s it, okay. Okay, okay, stop it now Neville.
God is a concept
By which we measure our pain, yeah
Pain, yeah
I don’t believe in Elvis
I don’t believe in Zimmerman
(Mababba bababba bababba bababba babba baba)
I don’t believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that’s reality
The dream is over
What can I say?
I was the dream weaver
But now I’m reborn
And so dear friends
You’ll just have to carry on
The dream is over
My Mummy’s Dead
JOHN: ‘My Mummy’s Dead’ is the pain of the thing. It, it helps to say “my mummy’s dead”, rather than “my mother died” or “my mother wasn’t very good to me”. And Yoko’s had, has the same problem, only her mother isn’t physically dead. A lot of us do, we have sort of images of parents, we never get from them, you know. And it doesn’t exorcise it, bang gone, the spirit’s gone but it helps. All art is pain expressing itself. And people don’t like to see that reality. The suffering.
My mummy’s dead
I can’t get it through my head
Though it’s been so many years
My mummy’s dead
I can’t explain
So much pain
I could never show it
My mummy’s dead
Give Peace A Chance
YOKO: Join us, you know, in the chorus, because Norman is a famous opera singer or something. Yes yes, okay. So shouldn’t we first do the ‘Give Peace A Chance’ because they remember it and all that. Just pasting it up on the wall is the best because it’s very functional.
JOHN: Okay, Derek, could you paste that up on the wall there, so as everybody can watch it.
YOKO: The best place where everybody can see.
JOHN: Put it over the eleventh commandment. Do you know where that, the other copy that I did, the quarter-size copy.
Everybody’s talking ’bout
Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism
Ragism, Tagism, This-ism, That-ism
‘ism, ‘ism, ‘ism
All we are saying is
Give peace a chance
All we are saying is
Give a peace chance
JOHN: It’s all important. Now, any of you know an off-beat? You’ll know an off-beat.
????: And off-beat what?
JOHN: You know, so only the ones for this track, if we do get two tracks, the ones that know what an off-beat is, do it, so as we get solid. And leave the others if they wanna join in, you know. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll try four in the bar because most people… All we are saying, I think that’ll be better, actually.
One, two, a-one, two, three, four… pah, pah, will you do an off-beat, do four in the bar, this one.
One, two, three, four.
Everybody’s talking ’bout
Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism
Ragism, This-ism, That-ism
This-ism and That-ism
All we are saying is
Give peace a chance
JOHN: Tommy when we do it get near the mic so we get-
All we are saying – you come this side
Give peace a chance
JOHN: Yeah, hold on a sec, so if we just get, just do a solid, straight rhythm for now and we’ll do the scat singing on the second track, okay. So we get it solid. Just do it flat-out. Okay, shall we take one? Now all join in on the chorus and don’t be shy, you know.
DEREK: No shutters in this.
JOHN: It’ll save us tracking, you know.
DEREK: Right back against the wall, right back against the wall. Right back because you’re in the way, get right back. Right back against the wall.
JOHN: Okay, we ready? Okay, a-one, two, three, four.

YOKO: Great!
DEREK: Okay, lights out, please.
???: All of them?
JOHN: Well, you know, just put the normal lamps on.
Cold Turkey
JOHN: Hello? Huh! Huh! Hah! Hello? Hello?
My feet are so heavy
So is my head
Wish I was a baby
I wish I was dead
Cold turkey
Has got me
On the run
(Instrumental)
Cold turkey
Has got me
On the run
Cold turkey
Has got me
On the run
JOHN: Well, that’s it.
YOKO: Yes, that’s good.
???: You’ve got the monitor on, though.
JOHN: Yeah that’s, you get some tape echo then, a bit of rock, you know. ‘Cause otherwise you sound like yourself!
GEORGE: What level did you have it, John? You’ll have to do it, just go and play a bit.
JOHN: I have it about half. Half of half.
Body is aching
Goose-pimple bone
Can’t see nobody
Leave me alone
My eyes are wide open
I can’t get no sleep
JOHN: A-one, two, three, half, four
Temperature’s rising
Fever is high
Can’t see no future
Can’t see no sky
My feet are so heavy
So is my head
I wish I was a baby
I wish I was dead
Cold Turkey
Has got me
On the run
Cold Turkey
Has got me
On the run
JOHN: That must have been it.
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)
JOHN: Okay. Okay, I’ll just get out on the one ’cause –
[WE ALL SHINE ON TAKE ONE]
JOHN: No, no, not, don’t double it. Just keep it dead simple. Just sneaky, you know. Okay, one, two, three, four…
Instant karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you on the head
You better think about it, darlin’
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
What in the world you’re thinking of?
Laughing in the face of love
What on Earth do you think you’re trying to do?
It’s up to you
Yeah, you
On…
JOHN: Okay, great working with you. Are we enjoying it? You know.
GEORGE: Did you ever get that album, John?
JOHN: Do you play tambourine? Right.
GEORGE: Did you ever get that album?
JOHN: Okay, we’ve just found our tambourine man but we need the tambourine now. Go and find Kevin or somebody to give him a tambourine?
GEORGE: Okay, from the top?
JOHN: Okay, one, two, three, four.
Instant karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better think about it, darlin’
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of?
Laughing in the face of love
And what on Earth you tryna do?
It’s up to you
Yeah you
JOHN: Wow, that’s a lot of guitar in the ear, isn’t it?
GEORGE: It’s the echo over the top. I tell you what may be nice. Just a suggestion, you know the first break?
JOHN: Yeah
GEORGE: Not to have it on first time.
JOHN: Okay. Don’t do it.
GEORGE: After we’ve been through one whole round, go to the C and then it’s back to the A and it goes round a whole other one.
JOHN: Yeah, and then it does the chorus.
GEORGE: Second one, before it gets to the G.
[WE ALL SHINE ON TAKE FOUR]
GEORGE: And then after the G.
JOHN: And then it goes every other time.
GEORGE: Yeah. Then the G goes… Then D…. E…. Then it’s that back into the A.
JOHN: Yes. One, two, three, four.
Instant karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you on the head
You better think about it darlin’
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of?
Laughing in the face of love
What on Earth you tryna do?
It’s up to you
Yeah, you
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
JOHN: Oh shit, shit. Very good though.
GEORGE: There’s a, sometimes it seems to do one more.
JOHN: I know, I did it too long.
GEORGE: Did you do it too long the other time with the G to the…
JOHN: On a few times, yeah.
[SIX, TAKE SIX]
JOHN: You ready? One, two, three, four…
Instant karma’s gonna get you
Gonna get you right in the head
You better think about it darlin’
JOHN: You’re telling me. Yeah I-
[TAKE SEVEN]
GEORGE: Yeah. Maybe if you even pull that screen away then he can get in there. Think he’s on the dead side of the mic on the drums so if you…
??: Come stand round here John.
GEORGE: You’ll have to get inside the screen or something. Alan, that was good on the intro after that piano bit.
JOHN: Okay, shall we go?
[TAKE SEVEN]
One, two, three, four
Instant coffee’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you on the head
You better think about it darlin’
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
Why in the world are we here?
Living in fear and pain
Why on Earth are you there?
You’re everywhere
JOHN: Okay, do it again.
GEORGE: Was that going back to, from the…
JOHN: Yeah.
GEORGE: Were we up to that?
[TAKE EIGHT]
JOHN: One, two, three, four Ahh, two, three, four.
Instant karma’s gonna get you-
GEORGE: We weren’t together.
JOHN: Yeah, one, two, three, four.
[NINE]
Instant karma’s gonna get you-
JOHN: Oh, fuck! One, two, three, four.
[TEN]
Instant karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
How in the world are you gonna see?
Laughing at fools like me
Who on Earth do you think you are?
A superstar?
Well right you are
Well we all shine on
Like the moons and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on, and on, and on, on, on
Yeah, yeah
Alright
Uh, huh
Ahh
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
On and on, and on, on and on
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moons and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun…
??: We’ll just check it, see if we’ve got it.
