Imagine A World Without Hunger
Today, there are 815 million people in the world—one in every nine – who experience hunger. A startling one in every four children around the globe doesn’t have enough to eat. In the face of the obscenity of those statistics, it may seem difficult to imagine John Lennon & Yoko Ono Lennon’s vision of world with no hunger.
For decades, Yoko Ono Lennon has worked with WhyHunger on a global campaign called Imagine There’s No Hunger to end childhood hunger and address its root causes. By harnessing the power of John & Yoko’s iconic song ‘Imagine’, WhyHunger has been able to build awareness, activate the public and engage celebrity ambassadors to raise more than $6.8 million to support community-led efforts to end hunger around the globe. Together, we are making John & Yoko’s vision a reality.
WhyHunger’s Imagine There’ No Hunger campaign works with grassroots partners around the world to grow nutritious food for children and their families, teach sustainable farming for a future free from hunger and support social movements. To fuel the campaign, WhyHunger teams up with corporate partners, like Hard Rock International, to raise funds and awareness from hundreds of thousands of individual donors. Through nearly a decade of traditional and social media, the tremendous support of Yoko Ono Lennon and the involvement of key celebrity influencers, like Ringo Starr, Forest Whitaker, Joss Stone, Darryl DMC McDaniels and O.A.R., #ImagineNoHunger has also educated and activated hundreds of thousands of supporters across the globe. Through an ongoing media and messaging campaign, WhyHunger is raising awareness on the issues of childhood hunger and challenging the traditional charitable approach to end hunger to instead focus on solutions that are community-led, environmentally sustainable and long-term.
Funds raised through the Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign have supported 48 grassroots initiatives in 31 countries to implement sustainable food solutions to nourish people, empower individuals and transform communities. Through these community-led food production and social justice projects, more than 10 million nutritious meals were provided to children and more than 45,728 farmers were trained to grow healthy food using agro-ecological practices that work in harmony with the earth. Today, tens of thousands of families are growing healthy food and sharing their knowledge with others, multiplying the impact of the Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign and improving the future for children and their communities.
Inspired by John & Yoko’s vision of a world at peace and free from hunger, WhyHunger calls for the rights to land, water, seeds and training to ensure all children, and their families, have access to healthy food and a dignified life without hunger. WhyHunger believes that nutritious food is a human right, and works to protect the right for all people to live in dignity, free from hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.
WhyHunger believes it’s critical to support communities’ initiatives and creative power to change their lives by not just meeting their immediate nutritional needs each day, but by supporting grassroots-led efforts as well as engaging others across geographical boundaries to create a chain of solidarity and mutual learning.
WhyHunger’s strategy of partnering with grassroots organizations and providing resources to support community-based solutions has proven radically successful both in the efficiency of the investments and the scope of our results. Through strategic partnerships across the U.S. and around the world, WhyHunger has been able to make a substantial impact in alleviating hunger in dozens of communities through long-term, systems-level change. In our forty year history, WhyHunger has built relationships with thousands of grassroots organizations and social movements in the U.S. and abroad and we are poised to significantly scale up this effective strategy.
