CHILDHOOD ARTWORKS.

John: I’ve been satirising the system since my childhood. I used to write magazines in school and hand them around. One of my earlier efforts at writing was a ‘newspaper’ called The Daily Howl. I would write it at night, then take it to school and read it aloud to my friends. Looking at it now it seems strangely similar to The Goon Show! Even the title had “highly esteemed” before it!

John Lennon - BAG ONE lithograph collection, 1970.

JOHN LENNON – BAG ONE, 1970.

To celebrate the wedding of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. A gift from John to Yoko.
14 original lithographs pulled on BFK Reeves paper at The Bank Street Atelier, Ltd., New York. The pull is limited to 300 examples, each print individually signed by John Lennon and numbered 1 to 300; 45 examples, hors de commerce, each print individually signed by the artist and numbered HC I to HC VL.

The set was originally available in a white heavy-duty vinyl folio bag designed by Parisian couturier Ted Lapidus, 34 x 26cm, with zipper closure, buckle clasp and key, two handles and luggage tag, printed on one side with a John Lennon facsimile signature and large black block letters ‘BAG ONE’.

First exhibited at the London Arts Gallery, 22 New Bond Street, London, on 15th January 1970. Individual lithographs were for sale at £40 each, with the full set, in portfolio, priced at £550.

Lithographs:

  • Erotic No. 3
  • Erotic No. 4
  • Erotic No. 5

The exhibition was scheduled to last for two weeks but on the second day, apparently after complaints, the gallery was raided by the police, on the basis that the gallery had exhibited ‘to public view eight indecent prints to the annoyance of passengers, contrary to Section 54(12) of the Metropolitan Police Act, 1839, and the third schedule of the Criminal Justice Act 1967′. The case came to court at the end of the following April, at the Marlborough Street Magistrates’ Court. However, the magistrate, Mr. St.John Harmsworth, threw the case out, deciding that the erotic images were ‘…unlikely to deprave or corrupt.’

John Lennon - AI - Japan through John Lennon's Eyes.

AI: JAPAN THROUGH JOHN LENNON’S EYES, A PERSONAL SKETCHBOOK, 1976-7.

Among the sketchbooks John Lennon left behind was an exercise notebook full of playful line drawings he sketched while learning Japanese. The wistful humour and gentle satire in these intimate drawings create a charmed vision of the way in which Lennon introduced himself to Japanese life and language. The sketchbook’s wonderful wit and artistry enlarge our view of John Lennon by letting us share his eye, ear, and love of the world.

“This book was named ai (pronouced ‘eye’) because that was how John viewed and experienced Japan – with love.” – Yoko Ono Lennon

John Lennon - Real Love: The Drawings For Sean.

JOHN LENNON – REAL LOVE: THE DRAWINGS FOR SEAN, 1975-1980.

By John Lennon, adapted by Al Naclerio from drawings by John Lennon.

Foreword by Yoko Ono:

‘1975, John became the father of a very special boy: Sean. John was ecstatic. “I’m going to raise this baby, Yoko. You do the business.” he said. It was that simple.

John was a great daddy. He tried to do everything so right. I would come back from a hard day of work and find John waiting for me to report what took place that day.

“Sean was sneezing this morning. Maybe he’s getting a cold.”

“Sean needs more winter things. We have to go shopping.”

Then pretty soon it became, “Sean did this all by himself.” And John would proudly show me some squiggly lines Sean had drawn on paper. They were Sean’s first drawings.

John had every one of Sean’s drawings framed. We suddenly had many, many framed drawings by Sean adorning the walls of our Dakota apartment. Then I began to find John and Sean drawing together. John would draw something and explain to Sean what it was.

“This is a cat napping, Sean.”

“Oh.”

Then it was Sean’s turn. He would show his drawings and explain, “This is a bus, and these are the people who want to get on the bus, but they can’t because the bus is too small… so they’re crying.”

John would write what Sean had said underneath the drawings as titles. They became long, beautiful, and imaginative titles. Sometimes, John would ask Sean what he thought John was drawing. Sean would say, “That’s a horsey.” and that would become the title of John’s drawing. They would make each other laugh, and that was how Sean learned the fun of drawing, the fun of doing things together with his dad, and the fun of life.

The drawings were done in the spirit of laughter… and lots and lots of love.’
